MOM's and Dad's need BOTH to follow the same rules. When we have
parents at camp, we tell them that they can either act as ASSISTANT
leaders, or pretend to be on vacation. They CAN NOT clean up
after thier kids, or wash kids socks or make them eat porage!
They can not get upset if the socuts get dirty or wet, and they
must at least PRETEND to have fun!
They can help sing songs at the campfire and set a good example
by keeping their own area clean, showing proper care of tools etc.
At some limited campouts, we let the parents cook thier own meals
seperate from the scouts, but mostly we want the scouts to show
the parents that, the scouts KNOW how to cook and clean up on a
camp out. If a parent know some good campfire stories, great.
Or maybe they know an outdoor skill they can demonstrate etc.
If they have any complaints, they should write them down and
bring them to the next committee meeting! (we catch more
new committee members with that one :)
At time the adults can almost outnumber the scouts, and I think
we need to maybe keep an eye on that. I know our OA lodge has
recently asked that no more than 1 adult attend OA functions for
each 2 scouts from any unit. Maybe that is a good ratio, expect
for father/son or mom/son campouts? What do others think about
TOO many parents at camp? Or too many ADULTS, parents or leaders?
