G'day Bill,
In Canada, we use the same "GROUP" concept that you describe in
Australia. Example is that our Group (the 16th London Group) consists
of the 16th Beaver Colony, 16th Cub Pack and the 16th Scout Troop. We
don't have enough kids going up to Ventures and Rovers to support them
in the 16th Group. I'm not sure who looks after them but I can find
out.
We have a Group Committee( at the momment it needs more members) which
consists of a leader rep from the colony, pack and troop. There is also
suppose to be parent representation and we are trying to get someone
from our sponsoring organization to come out. The funds are controlled
by the group committee, for the most part. We report to them on all of
our activities.
We have a lot of "bridging" activities, so that the kids get a chance to
see what goes on as they get older. It is suppose to encourage more to
move up the ranks.
My biggest complaint, at the present time is that our Group really
doesn't have an effective Group committee. I find tha most of the
leaders don't bother going to the committee meetings and our committee,
which should have 6 or more members is running with one or two. The
meetings are very few. We have had two in the last year, and this
should be monthly. The meetings have also been very short (15-30min).
This is not the case for all other groups aound here. I think that it
is hurting the 16th in general since we don't get together often enough
to know what's going on, or more importantly, form friendships, that
might encourage more parent/leader participation.
The one element that is missing at the committee level is FUN. Yes, us
older folks need fun, too. When the meetings are boring, no one wants
to show up. Sounds familiar?? <BG>
You asked me in your last post, why my server was a USA server? Good
question. I think that it was the best gateway for our local system.
He is actually going to be using two gateways soon. I don't understand
all this internet gateway/server stuff. It's all I can do to get a
message into cyberspace and get it read. I really get a kick out of
being able to send messages to far off places, and get responses in a
day, instead of the snail mail rought or the expense of a phone call.
Just thought I'd let you know that we have snow here now. Brrrr! Think
of me when your sitting out in the hot summer sun, down there in OZ!
