Michael,
It was interesting to see your posting, as I am/was in the same
predicatment as your Bear den leader. The one difference is that I have
not been exposed to much camping, and what little I did usually turned
into less than pleasant experiences. I hope to remedy that during my
Webelose leader experience.
My husband and I have been den leaders for our son's den for both
Wolf and Bear (current). We have been told both by parents and other den
leaders that the cubs really enjoy us as leaders. I hope that is indeed
true - we do try to keep things interesting and fun. We have such a good
group - 9 boys who are overall a bit shy, but anxious to please, and all
of them have such interesting "life tales" as I like to call them. All
but two of the nine attend school together in our town of 1200 (one is
home-schooled and one is from a neighboring larger town that doesn't have
as good a scouting program). Also unique to our den is that all the boys
come from "complete" homes - no divorces, no single parents. I think this
is quite an advantage for us.
Anyway, I had qualms about continuing as a Webelos leader, but I
know my husband (who is also the Asst Cubmaster) would be great! He's a
camper, bow hunter, electrician/electronics hobbyist, general fix-it man,
and outdoorsman from the word go! We have talked it over with our
Cubmaster and decided that what might work well is for me to continue as a
leader, but handle the organization (which is my forte), and enlist
another male parent (or two) to serve as Asst den leaders or just male
mentors. This sounds good to me. I thoroughly enjoy, but do not excel
at, some of the more traditional "male activities", and I think I can help
make the scouting experience good for the boys. Although I am not "up" on
the whole Webelos program, after talking with my CM & husband, I am
convinced that together we can do a good job.
I have talked with female Webelos leaders at Leader Training and
they seem to have had no problems in their positions. In your case, I
would suggest trying to find some interested male mentors to assist your
leader. Otherwise, let her continue as a Bear or Wolf leader or in some
capacity in your Pack Committee. She sounds like a great resource person!
