Should we expell him?

I agree completely with the group who say we should work with
the boy and not expell him. He obviously has recent problems
and expelling him could do him further harm.
We had an incident several years ago when I was Scoutmaster
with a boy who was constantly annoying and picking on other
scouts. During one joint camping trip with a troop from a
neighboring council, he got into two fistfights with the same scout
from the other troop.
After the second fight, I told him that I thought he should find another
troop because his behavior was totally unacceptable. Fortunately for
both of us, my SPL interveened on the scouts behalf and asked that
I reconsider and that if I did, they would handle the problem.
I did, and they set up a strict behavior code for him with stated punishments
for bad behavior. The whole incident had a tremendous effect on that scout.
Several months later his family moved from upstate NY to Michigan. About
a year later, the scout and his father came back to visit. He was very
proud to tell me that he had been elected SPL and was now setting the
example for the younger scouts.
So, before making a hasty decision, consider how it may affect the scout
and if there is a way you can work with him.
