Firearms Safety

The paintball gun incident has pointed out to me the importance of teaching
firearms safety to youth. Regardless of your opinion on gun ownership, guns
are a fact of life here in the US. Most firearms 'accidents' are caused by
ignorance of safety rules and could be prevented.
I would suggest that any of you who are firearms instructors work with the
local scouting organization to get the safety message across.
I have offered range instruction at a number of council events which would
not normally have a rifle program, and it has been generally well received,
even if attendance has been lower than at events like volleyball. The
unfortunate part in this is that the scouts who come generally already have
a reasonable knowledge of firearms safety. We need to get the message out
to the others.
In addition to summer camp, events which could use a rifle range could
include
camporees, klondike derbies, etc. I have run the range for OA picnics,
fellowship
camporees, one Section Conclave, and an Explorer camporee with good results.
Of course, this will only work at camps with proper ranges.
