Let me first share some information with you all, and then from this
information, pose a question.
One of the training sessions at Wood Badge course C21L dealt with the issue
of tenure, and was divided into two parts: 1) how do you attract boys, and
2) how do you keep them? It was explained to us that this issue can be
restated to: why don't they want to join, and why do they want to leave?
After these introductory statements, the learners were posed this question:
What specific steps can we take with the troops we serve to involve more
youth and extend their membership in the program of the BSA?
The following were our responses to the first part of this question...
involving more youth:
Advertising and marketing, scout shows and fairs, public service messages.
The following were our responses to the second part...keeping Scouts already
in the program:
Use the program properly (allow them to lead and learn), make the program
fun, improve the Webelos to Scout transition, encourage Webelos and Scout
co-activities as campouts or camporees.
This covers some of the "nuts and bolts" issues of tenure, and provides some
basic information to the list, but my question is this: What really neat
things have you, your troops, and councils done to address the issues of
Boy Scout age recruiting?
Thanking you in advance,
John Beaumont
