Nice to see some realist controls on this type of Fund Raiser. My folks live
in Las Vegas now and have friends with boys in Scouting. The troop of one of
the friends has Cake Auctions. Here's the kicker...The parent MUST purchase
their son's cake!!! The Chartered Partner fills the room and bids from all
over go for the cake. A signal is given when it is believe that the bids are
high enough and the parents make the final bid.
So how high to they get? Very high!!! $125 to $300 per cake. You have two
boys in the troop? Yes!!! Two cakes you get to "Buy" at this price range.
This troop's Chartered Partner is very controling of the unit. Even the
Asst. Patrol Leaders are determined by the Exec Board of the Chartered
Partner.
Let's say your son has not gotten to Star Rank by a set date. As parents,
you get to go before the Exec Board and get explained the "Way It Is In This
Troop" about adavncement. Your son will get that rank earned.
How about those camping requirements. Parents must go camping with their
son's. Not on troop campouts, but on their own. The troop does not go
camping. Only through going camping as a family does a boy (in the Chartered
Partner's eyes) meet the requirements.
Every boy in the troop must have a Board of Review once a month in full
uniform. Even if he has nothing to get reviewed. A must get his Eagle done
by age 14. His Eagle Service Project must be the "CORRECT" type to the Exec
Board of the Chartered Partner. If not, no other scout from the troop will
work on it or be part of the boy's Eagle Court of Honor.
Does this all sound non-Scouting Like. I think so. I have a hard time
believing these boys even understand what the Eagle Award is since everyone
must gets it the way they do. I have seen this troop in a visit to my folks
this past June. I had a hard time staying the whole meeting having just come
from a week at the Philmont Training Center.
I have also learned that a few parents have gone to the Council Office about
all of this and nothing has changed. These boys are not getting Scouting as
Scouting was ment to be.
Just thought you might want to learn about a not so bright scouting
happening. This Cake Auction thing just got me going.
I have not noted the troop or Chartered Partner for a reason.
