Re: $ and Scouting

My son is very fortunate since going into 6th grade. A philanthropic
organization is funding the Boy Scout Troop at his school. I volunteered
to be a Committee Member (behind-the scene leader). The boys are given
uniform shirts, hats, neckerchiefs and manuals. The leaders are given
uniform shirts, slacks, belts and bolo ties. All of our hikes and
campouts will be funded...transporation, food, camp fees. There is even
some equipment that has been donated. If there is enough money left, the
Troops (there are three of them in this funding program) will be able to
purchase tents and other equipment. The boys still pay dues (50 cents a
week) just to get them into the habit of paying at least some of their own
way. We will participate in some fund raisers, for the same reason. The
program was designed as a study to see if Scouting would make a difference
in the academic careers of inner-city boys. Our first hike is November
19. Hope we don't lose anybody <g>.
