Liz and everyone else,
thank you Liz for reminding me about the Learning Disabilities manual. I will
pick one
up this weekend.
I am real interested on how others deal with the ADHD and other things like
LD. Some out there
may classify ADHD as the sickness, disease, or fad of the 90's, but it is more
than that.
Take it from someone who knows. Me! I am 37 years old and have only been on
medication since May
of this year. I can only say that I wish that I would have had the medication
available 26 years ago
when I was in school and getting started and when I started in Scouting.
Now mind you, I was active in some form of Scouting until I was 24 years old
(I got married and had to
take a break). When I said active I was active. Scouting and everything about
it was the focus of my life.
I attained the Life rank, was elected to Order of Arrow - Brotherhood, held
every office except
Senior Patrol Leader, planned and lead a trip the Boundry Waters Canoe Area in
upper Minnesota. But, when
it came to attaining Eagle I did not make it. I could have had I had the focus
necessary. Thats why I wished
that I could have had the chance to have a medication like Ritilin (?). Not
that this alone would have been
the cure, but maybe it would have helped. Like not reaching Eagle I never
finished college, stayed for 4 years but never finished.
Stop rambling and get to the point. Knowing what I know now, maybe I can help
others with ADD, LD, ODD, and the rest achieve what I did not. And maybe
Scouting is the way I can make it happen.
