Re: ADD & Promotion

As a former SM, it was fairly easy to detect that there was a "problem" with
the Scouts ability to participate and advance. It was easy to move the
Scout to another Troop Guide or Assistant Scoutmaster who could explain
or work the problem with the Scout. It was my experience with my ADD son
that may have helped me as the Scout Leader to go a little further. Find
the alternative wording/idea/action. Now that I am a trainer, it is one
of the side topics that comes up at least once a month. It may come up
during the roundtable (CS or BS) as how do I work with Scout X. You
show them techniques, ideas, etc. that have been successful for you. As a
Communications and Cit in the Nation MB Counselor, it is just part of the
"process" to get the Scout to solve the problem. As a trainer, there is a
"sell" portion of my presentation that tells leaders that these kids are
Scouts because they want to be, don't drive them away because you don't
understand the problem. Ask the resources around you. I plan on making it
a "miniversity" 30 minute session that will run at the March Scout Show.
By the way, he did make Eagle Scout and is a Junior at Southern Conn. It
wasn't easy but you make it happen.
