ADMIN: Subject Line Descriptors

Michael F. Bowman (mfbowman@CAP.GWU.EDU)

We've a had a bit of discussion on how to use the subject line to help
readers zero in on information of interest to them. I agree with Mike
Walton that we don't want to get to the point of splitting up or losing
the sense of family we have here. On the other hand, if it helps
communication, why not? There always times when you want to find out
something in a hurry and it may help.

Some thoughts compiled from postings I've seen on this subject:

1. Don't use "Re:" in a subject - its redundant, wastes bandwidth.
2. Use SCOUTS-L Listserver Topics - I think this may be too difficult
and doesn't address the concerns folks have raised; e.g. which
country is information about or type of information - Nathan you
may want to look at this as a matrix.
3. Don't use any topics - would inhibit information flow.
4. Use topics that key information (David Jansen from Leiden suggested
using internet abbreviations, Mike Walton suggested a few more
alternatives, others have added to the list or corrected errors;
e.g. Commonwealth instead of Dominion).
5. Several wanted separate BSA and GSUSA leads instead of US or USA.

For what its worth, I've tried to form a listing based on those comments
with a little editorial leeway. These abbreviations could be used to
begin subject lines:

Like Mike Walton, I try to read every posting every day. I enjoy the rich
variety and love to hear how Scouting is done around the globe. For those
who would be helped by these lead-ins, I'm willing to give it a try.
