Charles Schmidt Writes...

"This boy earned star at a very young age in a troop out of council and

"opportunities." We place half a dozen den chiefs, have two aspls and
"two qm's, a couple of guides and an instructor. An more importantly,
"there is the issue of providing a good program. The boy is well liked

Charles:

After attending last night's ALT session (as part of the staff), your
post reached out and grabbed me, as some of this is quite (re)fresh.

Since the boy obviously needs a Troop leadership position, I am a bit
curious as to why you listed only the ones that you did? There are
other leadership positions that you didn't mention, among them are
Troop Scribe and Troop Librarian. You also don't say how long the term
of office is for these postions. Do you the boys change yearly? Every
six months? Quarterly? How long are the Troop Guides in position?

According to the instructor last night, the TG requires MORE leadership
than the SPL. The SPL is responsible for running the Troop. The TG
is responsible for the "shaping" of the New Scouts. As the new Scouts
are the future of the Troop, they require the greater leadership.

My experience has been that it is not that difficult to find a leadership
position for a boy needing leadership responsibility. But FIRST, do
yorself and him a favor, and send him to JLOW or JLT. Give him the tools
that he needs to do the job, before you give him the job to do.

I didn't used to be anything! (Except younger) Maybe someday...
