I disagree. When I lived in the US I was made to recite the Pledge of
Allegiance every morning, and to this day I feel quite angry about it. I was
only about 8 and probably didn't tell my parents how strongly I felt as my
mother was quite surprised when the subject came up recently.
I think it is very much up to the people concerned to make their own mind up
about such issues, after discussing it with someone and talking about
alternatives. Don't think someone is too young to understand, the discussion
is important, (I realise in this case they are likely to be older kids).
It is not that I would ever be disrespectful to a flag, but I have my own
Nationality and my own system of beliefs and need to make my own decisions from
that viewpoint.
I think standing to attention without the salute would be the most comfortable
for me although other people may be perfectly happy to make a Pledge or salute
etc.
