Fred et al.,
The Ashley Book of Knots is certainly not a introductory or beginners book of
knots. As I mentioned nearly a year ago here on the net it is a rather
exhaustive survey of every knot known up to the time of Ashley (circa 1940s I
think). As I recall there are catalogued over 3000 knots, splices, block and
tackle systems, etc. Be aware that a knot is given a particular name as a
result
of the way it is tied, not as a result of the finished product. So a square
knot
is a square knot because of the technique of weaving the rope strands together.
Another method of weaving them to get the same result will yield a different
name in theory. I purchased my copy over three years ago, and indeed it is
expensive, but once in a while you can find an old copy at a price of less than
$20...my brother did.
