Philmont JLT - What a great course

I had two of my boys attend our Council's JLT course last week... This
is the first one we have been able to have since 1991 when my son went
through it.
In preparing for this year's, the Scoutmaster took 3 of the Junior staff
to the Philmont JLT training course during July. I knew that the staff
seemed very well prepared when I went up on the first day to deliver the
course Tee-Shirts that I had silk-screened. During the opening ceremony,
as I stood with the Adult staff, I thought about what a rag-tag group of
kids these 36 boys were. They were just THERE. The junior staff was
enthusiastic, but the boys weren't.
But by Friday evening when I came back for the Feast, what a change...
As they came down the road as a Troop, all 36 were yelling chants and
singing songs. The senior patrol leader lead them in cheer after cheer.
(No, their lines weren't perfect, but they didn't look rag-tag). They
had spirit like I haven't seen in boys in a long time.
The three Junior staffers who had gone to Philmont had used everything
that they had learned and passed the info on to the rest of the Junior
staff. Our Council Training Chairman told me that the opening campfire
had nothing in it that he had ever seen before. The Junior staff had
taken the materials from Philmont and used them.
The SPL had been leading the boys on about their hats. He had been telling
them that they were to get a "neat" baseball cap with the council emblem
on the front and their names on the back... NOT They were really surprised
when they all received their own "Smokie" hats after the feast.
The spirit didn't stop.... After we came back from the evening ceremony,
the boys went into the open area of the staff area and were still sing
songs and chants... We, the adults went on up to the back of the dinning
hall for our "cracker barrel" -- no crackers, ice cream, cookies, and
watermellon...
My observations are that sending key parts of your JLT staff to Philmont
is WELL worth the time and effort.
Without saying, as a Troop Leader, it is well worth your time to send
your boys to JLT..
