Re: Introduction/Supplemental Scouter Training

Bob,

Years ago some districts/councils had Show and Do's (some may still do
these). They are all day Saturday or weekend events providing Basic
Scouting Skill training to the Adult Leaders. IT could be modified
for advanced
skills. Consider a weekend format for your training. I know a week sounds
like a lot of fun, but I bet many of the leaders you need to reach the most
will never be able to take a week for this activity.

In Los Angeles, they have (had?) a very active High Adventure Committee at
the Council level. Training courses for Backpacking (Adult and Youth),
Rock Climbing, Snow camping were offered. The Adult Backpack training
course I took had an all day Saturday session and then an overnight
backpack trip.

You may find leaders interested in learning about backpacking but not snow
camp or the other way around. Breaking your training into specialized
courses will help better prepare the staff, make the courses more
attainable by most people and you will also find it easier to get the best
staff.
