Strange as it may or may not seem, American Scouting in Europe generally
operates independently to the point where most American Troops have little or
no contact with host nation Scouting. I have always felt that the American
kids were missing a gret deal if their unit did not participate in
international Scouting events, such as Intercamp - not to mention going to
summer camp in European Scout camps.
However, there are a lot of Americans living abroad who apparently do not
share my viewpoint, so American Scouts camp in traditionally set up
American-style camps. This separation is carried to the point where Scout
Groups from other countries who would like to go to camp with the Americans
in camps such as as Camp Freedom in Germany are routinely turned away with
the reason being that the Transatlantic Council camps are for American Scout
Groups only. While there may be some vague justification in this in terms of
host nation agreements, the only ones who suffer are the Scouts.
