Mike, it seems that you're not the only one who could count - I only counted
30 (Hornaday Award is in mine). That leaves 32, with the Tiger Cub Coach and
Silver Dollar - oops, I mean James West Fellowship - Award currently listed
for wearing.
Although it would be legal to wear the Silver, Ace and Ranger knots, I
thought that the Explorer Achievement Award knot replaced all those.
Actually, I have not seen any old-timers wear those knots, and to get them
from the memorabilia sales lists (a real one, that is) is almost as expensive
as buying the medals themselves! (I have a friend who earned the Silver
Award, and I've been looking for a medal for him - his got damp and ruined -
it's really crusty. Maybe someone on the list knows where the ribbon for the
old Silver Award can be found? The medallion may be salvagable by a
reputable jeweller). Even the fake knots are getting a pretty penny!
This discussion kinda goes along with the thread on old "permanent" awards.
Maybe it's time for National to compile a list of those old permanent awards
and include them in an Appendix in the Insignia Control Guide, including
proper wearing.
