The recent messages re. the tradition of carrying campfire ashes from one camp
to the next reminded me of a very special occasion. I was a staff member at Kan
dersteg, the international Scout Centre in Switzerland 2 years ago. At the end
of the staff training period, the new staff "graduate" - this involves a meal,
then a trek through the woods, (in my case, lit by flaming torches, and with a
foot of snow on the ground,), being greeted by each old member of staff, and fi
nishing at a fire, where the Scout Laws (we used the ones from New Zealand) are
said, Kum Bah Yah sung, and the ashes of the previous graduation fire sprinkle
d on the new one - reflecting the tradition of volunteer scouts from all over t
he world who go to work for International Scouting. The tin containing the ashe
s is considered so important, it is kept in the Centr safe!
Happy Scouting! rachel
