On winning, I would first ask what is winning? Does a person, be that
person a youth or an adult, lose when that individual participates in
something but doesn't perform better than another person?
I think it's important for us as leaders to identify different styles of
winning and help the youth to recognize this. It goes along with
recognizing the accomplishments of individuals and the differences between
them. Perhaps one Cub's car is faster than another's, but someone else
may have a more unique design, still another's may be the most original,
another's might be the most true to life, another's might have the finest
finish, another's . . . . . and so on.
It is important to recognize in some way everyone that participates for
the simple act of participation. It is also important to encourage the
highest performance through recognition of accomplishments. And it is
important to foster an awareness of varied skills and abilities.
My son's car was second among the Wolves and fourth in the Pack. Our pack
made a pretty good effort at ensuring as many Cubs got some type of
recognition as possible. He was thereby encouraged by their [ meaning,
people outside our home ] recognition of his effort and he will strive to
do his best in the Derby next year--and in things in between and after.
