I ran into a similar problem this year with Rock Climbing. Our Troop began
competing in local rock climbing events, the result was not very good. The few
winners began to put competing against one another before all else, and the
rest of the group quickly lost interest, seeing themselves as inferior.
We stopped climbing competitions as a Scout team. Several boys still compete,
but with their parents support, not the Troops'.
The lesson learned is that competition within a group does not build team
spirit and success. Most corporations has found this to be very true in recent
years, and have moved from vertical organizations to self-directed team
management.
