In regards to awards for pinewood derby races our pack gives all boys a
pinewood derby ribbon for participation and trophies for winners
only. However at our church where I teach Royal Ambassadors (1-3 grade
boys) we also conduct a pinewood derby. We present all boys with a
trophy for participation and the winners recieve a larger
trophy.Unfortunately almost all sports for this age group present
trophies for participation. In this area the boys expect a trophy if
they participate in sports. Collecting trophies have become just as
important for the boys as earning camp patches.
This might sound strange but I prefer my children not to win in
everything. Losing teaches more about life than winning.Being able to
handle losing is part of the maturing process of life.
