I personally have mixed feelings. I wish that there were more
activities, particularly for boys, where they could be successful
without specifically ``winning''.
On the other hand, competition is an ingrained part of many cultures,
particularly in those aspects of the cultures that historically and/or
traditionally ``male''. Wishing that it was not so important does not
make so.
To the same extent that I think boys need to learn that competition
and winning aren't the most important things in the world, I think
that the two boys that you mentioned need to learn to compete
honorably -- to be able to compete and either win or lose in a
dignified manner.
