C.S. training update

To all Cub Scouters!

As stated last week, I had information on the new soon-to-be-here Cub Scout
Basic training course. We got the following information at the Central Region
Akela Calls Again at West. Ill University the weekend of June 4-5.

I will enter it exactly as written. This is a handout from the Cub Scout
Division, Boy Scouts of America (in other words National).

Fact Sheet
New Cub Scout Leader Basic Training

Background:

Since the inception of Cub Scouting more than 60 years ago, training for
leaders has been a key ingredient of the program. Over the years, the
training has been refined, improved, and expanded to meet the needs of adult
leaders. The current training plan includes Fast Start training to orient
new leaders, Basic training to deliver both general and position-specific
information to help all Cub Scouting leaders deliver a quality program,
Supplemental training to expand knowledge, and Advanced training for trainers
of Cub Scout leaders. The current Basic training course is approximately
7 1/2 hours in length.

Today's leaders and potential leaders find it increasingly difficult to
participate in lengthy training experiences. This is a result of a number of
factors, including the immense increase in dual-career and single-parent
families, as well as other time demands beyond Scouting. Yet both the need
and desire for training are unchanged. To support this need, a major
overhaul of Cub Scout leader basic training is being introduced in August of
1994.

Highlights:

The new Basic training concentrates on these key elements that leaders need
to carry out their volunteer responsbilities. Less vital items will be
incorporated into Supplemental training available to leaders based on need.
The resulting Basic training is FOUR hours in length, delivered as either a
half-day or two-evening training expereience. The following topics are
included:

* Youth Development (Video-supported)
* Aims and Methods of Cub Scouting
* Pack Organization and Leadership
* BSA Policies (Video-supported)
* Uniforming
* Program and Activities (Video-supported)
* Advancement (Video-supported)
* Youth Protection (Video-supported)

Also included are specific training sessions for:

* Pack leaders
* Tiger Cub group coaches
* Cub Scout den leaders and assistants
* Webelos den leaders and assistants

A minimum of four trainers are needed to conduct the course.

Materials

The new Basic training is supported by an all-new CUB SCOUT LEADER TRAINING
manual, no. 34700, which also includes information on both Fast Start and
Supplemental training for Cub Scout leaders. A new set of Basic training
posters, no. 34701, and a new five-part video, AV01V008, also support the
training. (ed. note: there will be 21 new posters this time).

Launch

The new Cub Scout leader Basic training will be introduced at Professional
Leadership Training Conferences in each of the four regions during August of
1994. Supporting materials will be availabe to councils at the same time.
The new training may be implemented immediately or on whatever time schedule
best fits the needs of the council.

Hope this helps.
