Ed made a lot of good points about saftey. I would like to add one
point to his list. Setting a good example. I work with a new boy
patrol. We receintly worked on the Toten' Chip. We spent a while
talking about the right tool for the job.
I'm sure every Toten' Chip class gets the question about sheth knives.
The boys were told no sheth knives. One of the boys asked his dad, who
was on the sidelines, "you have a sheth knife when you ____ (scuba
diving, I think)". So, we got into the discussion that there are no
sheth knifes in camp because they aren't the right tool. If we do an
activity where sheth knifes are the right tool, they will be allowed
for that activity.
If we tell the boys that the pocket knife isn't the right tool for
carving, but go ahead and us it any way, we are sending the wrong
message. The result will be, as Ed pointed out, an injured Scout, or an
injured boy or man when they do the same thing later.
