It's all so simple, I'm amazed that no one else has stumbled on it before ...
One of the brethren said, about his desire to wear an Order of the Arrow sash
that is known to be improper, "I think there is a time to obey the word of
the law, and a time to heed the spirit of the law."
From the Insignia Control Guide: "Legend strips" or "sash backs" are not
official and may not be worn on the sash or with the uniform. The OA sash is
not worn with the merit badge sash. [and elsewhere] Appropriate OA honor
sash worn over right shoulder - under epaulet of tan shirt - diagonally
across chest to left waist. (Beading and protective covers are not
proscribed.)
The Scouting movement that I grew up in tried to teach us that heeding the
spirit of the law meant doing more - not less - than the law required.
Now, will one of you upstanding role models care to tell me - and all those
youth - that I misunderstood what all this was about?
