Bridging Youth to Adult

I have been fortunate this past year to have two of my Eagle Scouts remain
active in the Troop past their Eagle Courts. The first turned 18 last fall,
the second will turn 18 this month. Both will be leaving for college this
fall, and believe me, I will miss them.
Anyhow, I wanted to do something to recognize them for their efforts and to
mark their "coming of age." But rather than develop an elaborate bridging
ceremony, I chose to make a simple presentation at the end of a Troop
meeting. The first one I did last fall for Sean Martin, the second I will do
in two weeks for Andy Boersma.
I invited Sean's parents to come before the end of the meeting (actually I
strongly suggested that they be there -- parents are always welcome). Then,
at closing, I presented Sean with the knots for Arrow of Light and Eagle and
with an Assistant Scoutmaster badge, adding a few appropriate words of thanks.
A friend of mine, a fellow Bobwhite, told me that his Troop has an annual
dinner in September to recognize the Scouts who have turned 18 and many of
whom are leaving for college.
