First CS Camp Out

Our Cub Scout Pack had its first camp out Friday night. It was a
voluntary participation event and was pretty much made up of the Wolf den
with a couple older boys attending. The plans were to have a family
cook-out and crafts Friday evening. The families could camp over or
return in the morning for breakfast, a hike and the awards ceremony. Each
scout wishing to camp over had to have at least one parent/guardian
camping with him.

The camp out was in a small wooded park in town (1 block from my home).
The Boy Scouts Scoutmaster was in attendance with camping equipment as
needed: tents, cookware, etc., and he taught the boys how to cook dessert
in the dutch ovens (finally got to experience that after all the earlier
dutch oven discussion) which was a big hit. Later after crafts and play,
the boys popped some corn and the previous BS SM dropped in to tell ghost
stories. By this time I was home in bed. I had a 15 mo old toddler to put
to bed - and I am _not_ a camper. My husband was in his element camping
though. He hadn't been camping since a year after we married (10 years
ago) and he was an avid camper - has our son really enthused.

The next morning the adults were up early and I ran over to
help get breakfast started. We got the troops fed, and the tents
packed away, then went on a hike at a State Park 3 blocks away.
The trail we went on was "carved out" by the BS SM's son as his
eagle project, so there was added significance.

This was the CS SM's first camp out ever, and we all think it went well.
The BS SM is impressed with the Cub Scouts and my husband has already
committed to becoming a BS leader (we are the den leaders for our son's
den). Anyway, it was a "first" for our troop, and with all the recent
campfire/graduation ceremonies I've picked up from this listserv, we hope
to build and improve on this, making it more special and a yearly event.
