John -
The use of Akela as the name of the Scouter in charge of the Pack is very
widespread throughout the world, including, now, in eastern Europe. This is
due to the idea of basing much of the original Cub Scout programme on Rudyard
Kipling's Jungle Book. Other names used for Leaders in Cubbing include
Bagheera, Baloo, Kaa, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and others. Some are more frequently
used in some countries than others, but the Leader of the Pack is always
Akela.
