Re: Alternatives to Philmont

Brian,

my troop was fortunate as we did get picked to go to Philmont in `95. Our
council
(Capitol Area Council, Austin, Texas) does not have a contingent for
Philmont, however. The biggest drawback for Philmont in `95 is that they
want $25 per participant by June 15, 1994! A full 13 months before we even
arrive. I just hope that
this means Philmont will be less crowded in `95.

As far as alternate High Adventure; my troop will generally rotate between
Philmont and Northern Tier in Mn. Both are great programs! (though
personally, I prefer Northern Tier since the food is better and you don't
really have a schedule to keep like you do at Philmont). This year, my
troop is attending the new Texas Sea Base
called Laguna Madre. It is considerably cheaper than Florida Sea Base (at
least for those of us in Texas) as far as transportation costs go. We are
estimating $450 per scout, which is an excellent bargain for a program
similiar to Flordia's. In fact, the initial brochure from Laguna Madre was
just a copy of the Flordia Sea Base brochure!

good luck finding an alternative!
YIS,
richard fant
