ALternate HIGH adventure TREKS

I would HIGHLY recomend the various TREKS offered via
the Adirondack Scout Reservation. ASR has various
patroll style or base camp programs, plus 50 mile hikes,
50 mile canoe treks, mountain and rock climbs etc.
Although Whiteface Mountain or Mt Marcy in NY, may
not be the old Tooth of Time at Philmont, I have
very MUCH enjoyed Adirondack TREKS, both as a SCOUT,
and as a leader. You have options to set up your OWN
trek, and can combine 50/50 treks, or select from
a ASR program with a guide/voyager. You can also visit
the Adirondack Museum, and Lake Placid, site of Winter Olympics.
ASR Trek information can be obtained via Otetiana Council
in Rochester NY. I know there are subcribers who can
provide a Phone number or complete address, maybe even
a 1994 TREK program list?
As far a Philmont Lottery, I have HEARD talk that some number of
SLOTS are reserved for COUNCIL contingents each year, but all
councils do no get a slot. However, I do know at least 1 troop
from our council is going in '94, and has a couple openings.
You might also check councils near you to see if they have any
openings within troops that did get confirmed.
Don Izard,
A very happy camper, from past Adirondack TREKS
