Brian, I'd suggest you take a look at Sommers Canoe Base (Ely, MN). I
think they have an excellent program, and usually have openings. Your
trip starts on the shores of Moose Lake (but you might put in somewhere
else) and you can go most anywhere in Northern Minnesota or Southern
Ontario. You'll miss the ups and downs of Philmont hiking and they don't
have base camps scattered around, but you'll see some fantastic scenery and
some great wildlife and you'll have a great time. Your local council should
have the info.
If that doesn't work, try an "out of council" camping experience. Spend a
week at a different council's summer camp (in addition to a week at your own
council camp). It won't be Philmont, but the variety might help.
As for the lottery, I'll bet that a lot of council contingents will be made
up of groups like yours. Why don't you check with your council office to see
if they got a reservation and, if they did, whether you can make up part of
the group. BTW, I would not be surprised to learn that Philmont gave priority
to Council contingents. Maybe someone knows.
