Alternatives to Philmont

Howdy!

We got our letter from Philmont about the outcome of the
"lottery" held for space for summer of 1995. We are on the wait list with
a number somewhere around 1400 (I didn't see the letter myself as I am
here at school, but it was read to me over the phone). Anyway, it seems
that we now have a dilemma. I don't know what the cancellation rate is,
but it would surprise me if it was that high. The scouts have been really
looking forward to this trip. We have been talking about going to
Philmont for the past couple of years. So now what do we do??? Does
anyone have any information about other high adventure bases? Or any
other kind of "adventure" we can do as a troop? I would appreciate any
information anyone might have!

On the subject of the Philmont lottery, does anyone know if it was
a "straight" lottery, or were council contingents given priority over
troops? I heard that five other troops in my council all applied for
space for 1995, and none got it, but council did. Maybe it's just a
coincidence?

Thanks for any information!
Brian (who was looking forward to Philmont as much as the scouts were)
