Scott,
We tend to include some joining requirements in any Webelos visit. i.e.,
we make sure everyone knows how to tie a square knot and then we have a relay
mixing the Webelos with the scout patrols. We frequently encourage Webelos
to visit while the troop is on a campout near town. We often do a compass
course or a nature scavenger hunt--both seem popular with Webelos (and scouts)
One troop I know always bakes a cobbler when a Webelos den visits.
We always try to have at least one "scout" game and one "fun" game when
a Webelos den is visiting. Some of our meetings have only one or the other
because so much else is going on.
Another troop I know refuses to alter it's program in any way--SM figures
the Webelos should see what they will be getting!
From my perspective, the most important thing is that Scouts greet Webelos
and make them feel welcome, include them in activities, and not over sell the
troop. One troop tried to rush Webelos into campout but they weren't ready
to jump that night!! Secondly, adults should greet parents and make them
feel welcome. We try to have parents visit with adult leadership in an
adjacent room so they can get their questions answered. We also try to have
them observe part of the meeting.
If a pack gives us advance warning of a visit (always encouraged) we will
let them know if a meeting will not be a good choice. One pack didn't
announce a visit and showed up at a pot luck court of honor. They were too
late to eat and webelos were bored with the court since they had no role.
Most meetings would be satisfactory, even without warning. We just like to
avoid a disaster for the Webelos.
