Way ahead of you...Scott Daniels (one of the editors of both Scouting
and Boy's Life) and I go back a while (about 15 years or so....) and
I've already extracted the postings so far to send out his way come
next week. Don't expect any miracles...I'll explain the Boys' Life
*mystique* later on, however, since this topic FINALLY came up!
One more note about BL...it is VERY "dumbed down" to the second grade
level (it boasted at one time to be readable at the fifth grade,
second semester level!). Don't blame this directly on the BSA nor
BL...this is something we need to address as parents, taxpayers and
members of our communities. The simple fact is...it is getting harder
and harder for kids to PICK UP A BOOK AND READ! While I will grant
you that the graphics in BL is more inline with what second, third and
fourth graders would expect, it is the CONTENT of the magazine that
needs some upgrading. Part of the problem is that since BL *seems* to
stop dwelling on the Boy Scout program so much as it did in the past,
many kids simply read it for the sports articles (ala "Sports
Illustrated for Kids").
On a side note, I've heard about Dr. Kelley. I grieve with other
Scouters from the Kawida Lodge and from the Bluegrass Council at our
loss. I wanted to post a separate note, but this is probably the best
place to put this one....I've lost a friend on three fronts. Dr.
Kelley was my first contact with Scouters in southern Kentucky when I
started my Paraprofessional experience. In addition to a roaring
family practice clinic he started in the Somerset area, any time
anyone mentioned anything dealing with the youth of the area, Steve
Kelley was ASKED to come in and help get things going. He had an
amazing way of asking for money for various Scouting and non-Scouting
projects: he smiled, stated "remember what this is for: not to put
our names forward, but rather so that kids would be better-off than we
were when we were being raised". He found money in the coalfields
when many of us (me included) simply gave up. Dr. Steve made it look
easy: as a Scouter, as a family man, and as a member of his community.
Later on, he was tapped to serve as the Council's Exploring chair and
I was asked to serve on that committee. Together, the Bluegrass
Council's Exploring program was on a par with it's larger northern and
western "competitors". While we didn't have a large increase in youth
members, we did show a modest increase in the number and types of
units. It was through his efforts and leadership that the Bluegrass
Council stopped thinking of Exploring as a "secondary program" and
placed it right on par with its Boy and Cub Scouting programs.
Kara Trevello, the daughter of one of Dr. Kelley's fellow Scouters,
went onward to serve the Bluegrass Council as it's first Exploring
Executive. She currently serves as the District Executive for the
District which encompasses Somerset, Kentucky and several other
counties. She's one example of how Steven Kelley's influnce affected
many people in southeastern Kentucky.
As a fellow Republican, I've also lost a friend that believed in hard
work, justice and strenght of nation and community. He worked hard
--harder than any other local party chair--to see that their
represenatives got out and talked with the REAL people that made a
difference.
As a fellow Scouter, I've lost someone that I could call upon to be
there for any training event, any Wood Badge event, any time we needed
more words of encouragement from someone whom made Scouting more than
a past time...he clearly made it his business and a large part of his
personal and professional lives.
Thanks, Carroll, for posting the article from the Lexington
_Herald-Leader_ here for us, painful as it was to read and attempt to
understand why. It still hurts. To me, Dr. Steven Kelley will always be
an example of a great Scouter and a great public servant. He did what
we tell ALL of our Scouts and Scouters to do, and he did it extremely
well, "unselfish in devotion to the welfare of others".
He did his best.
