Hi,
I have a problem that I am having a very tough time dealling
with......maybe problem isn't the right word, situation may be
better.
Yesterday I got a call from my 12 year old daughter after she got
home from school. She asked me if I had heard about the death of a
young man......when I heard the name, I was stunned into disbelief.
The young man was one of my Den Chiefs. He was a former member of my
pack, a young man who was a member of the first Webelos group that I
transitioned into Boy Scouts at my first Cross Over as a Cubmaster.
His current Scoutmaster is a former Committee Chair of my pack and a
former Den Leader for my pack. His mother is currently my 1st year
Webelos Den Leader and his younger brother is in that den. Alan
Burwell was a 7th grader, a classmate of my daughter and a friend of
mine. He was a pleasant and considerate young man who took his
responsibilites as a Den Chief seriously. He had been a Den Chief
for about a year and a half and was trying to find a replacement.
Earlier this year, I awarded him his Den Chief service cord. His
family is going to have him buried in his scout uniform and his
Scoutmaster and I will have a contingent of Boy and Cub Scouts at his
funeral, in uniform, to pay our respects to a young man who dearly
loved scouting, and to his family, who has supported scouting since
Alan was a young cub.
Thanx for listening....maybe I just needed to get this off my chest,
but I am having a really hard time dealing with Alan's death. I have
not yet been able to notify all ove my Den Leaders, thought I have
notified the Scout Service Center.
