I disagree. I think it is the duty of the pack/troop leadership to provide
for the full participation of all of the members their unit accepts.
Our pack is sponsored by the Catholic parish, but we've had hindus,
protestants and non-religiously-committed participants. We've had
lactose intolerant, diabetic/hypoglycemic, gluton intolerant, and
a multitude of other alergies and preferences. It's unfair to say
to a young child, "most of us like milk, so you have to drink it
or bring something else."
On a few really esoteric cases, parents have volunteered to send something
if their kid is particularly difficult, so it can happen... but on other
times, the whole pack has switched because of one kids needs (for example,
we usually use crystal light sugar-free instead of kool-aid or freshie,
because the hypoglycemic needed it and it was easier than bringing both).
Besides, who's to say that the non-kosher participants wouldn't (a) learn
something or (b) enjoy themselves eating a kosher meal? I always hope I
get invited to our friends Hannukah party! (That's probably not spelt
right.)
[Now that I've rambled...]
If I were Rob, I would be much more concerned by the attitude he describes
being shown by the troop leadership. Non-observance seems to have turned
into disdain. Serving a choice of pork-and-beans or something else would
be much different that forcing pork on someone who can't eat it (seems
to do away with both "courtesty" and "reverence" in one swoop).
Rob, does the Chartering Organization know about the situation? What is
there view on the amount of orthodoxy?
I do agree with Beth that looking for (or even starting) another troop
might be worthwhile. I seen troops sponsored by non-religious bodies
that sound more accomodating that the one you (Rob) describe.
Regards,
Byron
