Boards of Review

The discussion on Boards of Review has been quite interesting. It also
points out, I believe, those who have the luxury of large troops and
troop committees. I agree that ASM's and (especially) SM's should not sit
on a BOR, sometimes it is a bit impractical, especially when most
committee members have sons in the troop.
We have solved this problem in our troop [small; only 13 active boys] by
making the SM and ASM's part of the committee - fully voting members, which
I know some troops do not do. The only restrictions we put on the BofR are:
1) SM does not sit on the board - he has already done the SM conference
2) no relatives on the board
Sometimes we have had to delay the board for a week or two, but the Scouts
usually understand the need for that. If you have a large troop with many
boys advancing, then you could also schedule SM conferences one week and
BofR's on the next. (and stick to the schedule!) Also, campouts are good times
for both of those functions. There is usually enough time & leaders.
I also like some of the questions I have been seeing. I always use
"Pick one of the phrases in the Scout Law. Now tell me what it means TO YOU"
or "what was the hardest of the requirements" or for the higher ranks
"which MB was the most fun... which was the hardest... talk about it"
