Steve Tobin's response has much good material in it. I would just like to
add that it is perfectly acceptable for the Scouter to take the initiative
and show respect toward the youth in his unit--especially toward the youth
leaders (JASM, SPL, etc.) and, in planning sessions, ask that they
reciprocate. Another step in this would be to let the parents know that,
as one of the fundamentals of the BSA program, you are trying to instill
this aspect of character. And, BTW, the parent was wrong: Although we
here it so frequently, Respect need not be earned _first_. It should
first be freely given, then withdrawn if warranted. This is a concept one
may well have difficulty conveying to the parents; however, in letting
them know respect is a part of Scouting, ask them to make some effort at
home to 1) show respect to their children and, 2) treat your name or
mention respectfully at home.
