The Uniform Guide and the Scout Handbook doesn't say a thing about how
to wear the hat (I guess somehow, it was left out when we migrated to
the present program...it DOES appear in the earlier Scout Handbooks).
However, our parents and others have taught us (and well, I may add),
that the hat comes off inside buildings, churches and other locations
EXCEPT if the person is part of a color guard, in which the hat can remain on.
It does bother me though. I also wore the

I place the bill of my cap in the back side of my pants when I am not
wearing the "official hat". It makes it really hard to do that with a
campaign hat or with my German "feldmeister" hat, though *grinning* .
The "old" (flat) style hat is still around, and you can still order it
from BSA supply....my personal favorite was the beret.
While we're talking about hats, I wanted to express my agreement with
both you and Charles about the hat thing, and offer one suggestion:
When I (and other Black men) don't comb our hair, it makes us look
sometimes like Buckwheat (in my case, like the guy that plays "George
Jefferson" on the sitcom "The Jeffersons", Sherman Hensley (whom, by
the way, is an Eagle Scout...another name for the Eagle listing...).
Those black kids in my Troops that refuse to take off their hats, I
come up to them and say "I understand why you want to keep your hat
on, but it's not polite to do so indoors...go to the bathroom and try
to comb your hair and leave your hat behind, please."
It works all of the time...but I do agree that MANY kids wear those
hats not because of their grooming lazyness, but because they view the
hat as a status symbol.
