Re: A little little boy

Well ... at first I wasnt going to reply to this one, but since it
affect me "directly" here is my opinion.

First off, I became Scoutmaster 10 years ago before we had any children.
I have always stressed that scouting is a family program. I cannot think
of a better way to enjoy quality time with your children than to be
involved with them in Scouting (both Girl and Boy Scouts). I have always
stressed that parents should come on campouts with their scouts.

Well, as it turns out, I now have 2 daughters ages 9 and 6. I have been
taking them on campouts with my troop since the age of 3 ONLY IF the
campout is appropriate. What I mean by appropriate is that there are
enough adults going to handle the program and that the program is appropriate
(ie NOT a canoe trip, etc.). My daughters do not compete with any of
the scouts or take a direct part with the boys program or competition.

My feelings are that while I enjoy scouting quite a bit, it can take
a lot of time from my family. I've computed that I have spent over a
years worth of nights camping in the name of scouting (boy it adds up
fast!) I intend to "practice what I preach" and enjoy an outing camping
with my family whenever possible.

I really look forward to the time when my daughters and I can spend
2 weeks at Philmont on a trek! What a place to experience and share
with people you love! Five more years and counting.

Yours in Scouting,
Jon Eidson, Scoutmaster Troop 76, Weatherford, Texas
