This isn't BSA policy and i'm not sure what the exact policy is.
As an EMT, we are not authorized to give drugs of any kind to a patient.
This includes an inhaler or a Bee Sting kit. This is my view for while
with the ambulance and how we do it at camp:
I don't give medications. I am not authorized to dispense it. But
i have yet to see where it says I am not able to assist someone in taking
something. Example: Someone is allergic to bee stings and is going into
anaphylactic shock. I can not give him any thing, but if he has an epi-pen
of his own i can "assist". This leads to question over how much help is
assisting before it is giving. I have no clear way of answering that.
Basically how to apply this to you:
1) The Leader must be aware of all meds (prescription/other)
2) The Leader does not give these meds to the scout (he is not dispensing
medication if it is already the scout's to begin with)
3) The leader does nothing more than assist. Help with a cup of water or
something but don't stick the pill in the kids mouth. If it's not an
oral medicine, then you can help, but make sure the scout is "taking it
himself" Don't grab a needle and stick a scout. At the very least make
sure that the scout has a hand on the needle (he should be doing most of
it on his own)
4) MAKE SURE ANY SCOUT COMING ON A TRIP WITH MEDICINE KNOWS WHEN TO TAKE
IT AND HOW TO TAKE IT.
5) I would recommend getting written instructions from the parent...ie: once
at night and once after breakfast...NEVER let them say "give it to him when
you think he needs it"...it is not your decision to make.
