On the thread of the girls at Summer camp issue.....
My first scout camp
(Camp Rotory - Chatham, MI- Tall Pines Council or Lake Huron Area
Council) had a young girl on staff working in the trading post and the
whole camp of boys were constantly talking about her and their "plans"
for her.
Camp Rotary is located between Harrison and Clare Michigan and is owned
by the Lake Huron Area Council (Auburn, MI).
Having worked at Philmont (where about 20% of the staff is female), I
saw VERY few major problems having the two sexes together. During three
years out there, I know of only once incident where a group of scouts
were vulgur in their pranks. The other problems I heard about dealt with
scouts with overactive hormones (female crew leader trying to seduce the
Ranger, 13 year old's hitting on a 19 year old female ranger, etc..).
I heard about more problems with the adults not being able to accept
women as equals in scout camp (not wanting to listen to female Rangers,
rude remarks toward female staff members, etc..). Fortunately, we
didn't see too much of this.
I do remember working in Logistics, we saw a itinerary request card
(listing choices of intineraries to be taken, in order of preference)
that the crew had asked to be given a "pretty female ranger." My
roommate and I discussed which Rangers would be appropriate (ones who
wouldn't take that stuff and would proceed to out camp them and out hike
them for 2 days, not to mention other ones, which in our opinions
weren't the prettiest staff members ).
