George,
The story I hear about the Scouting U.S.A. Shirts is quite different. The
shirts came out with the new program in the early 70's (I still have one)
and the emphasis of the new program was to get more inner city youth into
scouting. Now how many inner city youth (read that black) want to be called
"BOY" anything. It was BSA being PC before PC was even heard of. When they
found it made no difference, A Boy Scout is a Boy Scout and "BOY" used
alone was the word with racial connotations, and the program went back to
the outdoor emphisis, they want back to Boy Scouts of America.
Is this true, no idea. I do know that you will probably never get an
official admission of this since it's basis is racial. For some strange
reason we have trouble dealing with racial issues in a rational manner
and open manner (even historical facts). Some people are just too touchy.
