Chris: while you have some good points about travelling, convoys are
NOT allowed, thus, as good scouts, we DON'T do it.
But ...... Leaving at the same time, and driving the speed limit, will
probably get you to the destination at about the same time. A convoy
means that the vehicles stay together, and the act of trying to stay
together is often unsafe. So what do you do? Most of what you said
except the staying together part.
1. Always check the route first. When you do, establish what the
"tricky" turns are, note on maps, and choose gathering points.
2. Maps and first aid kits, kids health forms in each car. (the
forms for those in that car - in case of accident, you need
them with the kid, not the leader)
3. At each gathering point, the group stops, takes a pit stop and
waits for the other cars to catch up. On one outing, one car
"HAD" to stop for a premature pit stop and had us wondering ...
4. The gear car (which mine often is) either has my son/daughter only
or two kids in the back seat, or none.
5. CBs are great, and would have eased our mind (on #3), but must not
be used to verify Smoky's whereabouts so the pedal can be put to the
metal ... that wouldn't be following the Scout Law.
6. For short trips, we don't have gathering points.

BTW, the Girl Scout version of a Guide to Safe Scouting would be our
trusty SAFETYWISE.
