No they may not be safe AND if you read the new 1993 publication Guide to
Safe Scouting (A Unit Leader Guide to Current BSA Policy and Procedures)
#34410 it says on p. 31 "10. Do Not travel in Convoy."
So, not only is it maybe not safe, it is also against policy. Of course I
don't know how you keep 5 cars all going the same place at the same time
from maybe being close to each other, but as long as it's not a "convoy"
you are OK...
