Getting active in Florida...

Beach Bum - Dave Bujak (dave%db.erau.edu@HARVUNXW.BITNET)

Hi all, it's me again.

Some of you may recall that last fall I stated that I was trying to get
re-involved in Scouting now that I attend school in Florida. Well, I've
happy to report that I have finally made SOME positive contact in this
regard. I called the council again last week and they referred me to the
new District Executive. This D.E. was much easier to get a hold of and
was much easier to work with. He invited me to the district roundtable,
in order to possibly meet some leaders and see who needs help.

Here's where the not so good news comes in. Up until about 2 years ago,
the district had little or no organization to speak of. however, the
leaders have worked very hard at fixing this and have SOME semblance of
organization today. When offered a choice of troops, I was basically
offered Troop A (with a 1:1 Scout:Leader ratio, excellent footing, very
strong, solid active), or any other troop in the district (riddled with
countless problems). Now, I am not shying away from a challenge, but
some of the stories I have heard about the other troops, I am not
surprised most people flocked to form the ONE strong troop.

Well, basically at this point, I've met a few people, but I am not yet
"hooked" up with any particular troop. I was somehow set up with the
District's Camping and Activities Committee via the O.A. ??? That I have
yet to figure out. I was even suggested to take one of several open
Scoutmaster positions, which at 18, I obviously can't do, nor do I have
the time to do.

So..... i guess that's a start. The D.E. asked me to call him later
this week. The best news of the evening was that I will be helping the
D.E. on the local C.O.P.E. porgram. That does excite me.

Life's a beach...
