Steve,
I've seen and used a reference to an "adirondack" as a way to pitch a tarp
that resembles a leanto (3-sided). The grommets next to a corner become the
ridge line points with the corner anchored toward the ground to provide some
shelter from the front. The two corners next to the ridge line are dropped
to the ground to provide sides while the opposite corner is folded under to
provide the floor of the shelter. The "companion" grommets to those used on
the ridge line serve as the anchoring points for the back corners of the
shelter. A square tarp is easiest to pitch.
It serves as a nice shelter for one and gear, is lighter than a tent, and
admits plenty of bugs so that a camper won't feel alone.
