One of the aims of GSUSA and BSA is to prepare tomorrow's adults and leaders.
AIDS is a major threat to our children. They need to know about the disease
and how to protect themselves through abstinence, the use of condoms or
whatever.
As a parent I KNOW none of MY kids will be sexually active
until after they are married (yea, right). But we must face the facts that
most teenagers will have sex before they graduate from high school and
they will have several partners before they are married. We talk about
the dangers of smoking, drugs, drunk-driving and the wisdom of wearing
seatbelts, bike helmets, life-jackets, etc. So why shouldn't they learn
about the dangers of unprotected sex and the wisdom of abstinence or
using a condom if they can't abstain?
Since GSUSA has a lot of experience in delivering quality programs to girls
of a range of ages, I'm willing to assume that they can create an appropriate
program on AIDS.
I wish the BSA had plans for a similar program.
