ATLANTA- The Norwest Georgia Girl Scout Council will
use a $50,000 grant from Levi Strauss & Co. to teach girls
ages 5 to 17 how to protect themselves from HIV, the virus
that causes AIDS.
The grant is the first the clothing firm has made to a
Girl Scout council, company spokeswoman Mary Klem said.
Levi Strauss is based in San Fransisco, which has the
highest rate of AIDS cases among American sities. It gives
more than $1 million a year to AIDS education and support
services.
The Northwest Georgia council, made up of 40,000 scouts
from Atlanta north to the Tennessee border, will use the two-year
grant to train staff members and volunteers on how to educate the
girls.
"We've decided to do this because of the statistics related to
women in Georgia," said the council's Judi Borgo.
The Girl Scouts have a history of teaching girls about teen
pregnancy, substance abuse and suicide, and "the programming
has to change to meet the needs of the girls," Ms. Borgo said.
The council will tailor training to fit different scout populations
- urban, suburban and rural, even troops in shelters for the homeless
and in housing projects.
Parents were concerned about what would be taught to the
younger girls, but "they've been pretty receptive," said Scout leader
Beth Weiss.
"We will talk about condom use in the context of prevention,
but that's not to say we'll recommend having sex as long as you use
a condom," she said.

Have the GSUSA sold their soul?
Is this the purpose of the GSUSA?
Do you want your 5 year old girl learning about condom use?
Is this "needs of the girls"?
What ever hapend to camping, cooking, and hiking?
How about $50,000 for a new Girl Scout reservation?
Oh, well.
